Fear and ignorance often incite violations of human rights. Personal integrity, or a lack thereof, often defines who we are as humans.
I. After reading Act I, go to the following form to answer multiple choice questions.
II. After finishing the rest of the play, 1. Research McCarthyism, the Cold War, and the term allegory. 2. Create a newspaper that has the following: a. a review of the play - was it a credible allegory? why or why not? b. a faux interview with McCarthy - what questions would a journalist ask him that would be relevant still today? What would his answers be? c. a faux interview with Arthur Miller - what questions would a journalist ask him that would be relevant still today? What would his answers be? (hint: this should be the easiest of the bunch as Miller wrote actual essays about why he wrote this play) 3. Use a newspaper template in Google Docs, Word, or Pages, or you can create one on your own. 4. Should be in newspaper format - columns, headlines, advertisements. 5. Should be a minimum of two pages. 6. When you finish, save it with your first initial, last name in the title and email it to me as an attachment at bryce@nkasd.com AND ophecira@gmail.com.
Previous years There are three assignments for this play with the following due dates: YouTube Analysis - (PRE-READING) Wordle Voicethread - (DURING READING) Newspaper - (AFTER READING)
YouTube analysis: Before reading the play, research the following topics:
Puritanism,
theocracy, and
the Salem Witch Trials.
I would recommend finding sites in addition to Wikipedia to double-check your information. Be sure to take notes on the major points of these three topics.
After researching and taking notes:
find a youtube video you think most accurately represents the information you discovered.
Email me the link at bryce@nkasd.comwith a brief explanation (2 well-developed paragraphs) as to why that video gets your vote. You should also note if there were some aspects of your research that were not present or lacking and explain how the absence of it makes it less effective. In those paragraphs, you should cite information from your research to connect to the video.
Wordle Voicethread: Create a character chart in which you record the following information as you are reading:
character name,
physical descriptors,
personality descriptors, and
major actions in the play.
Once you have finished reading, you are going to create a Wordle Voicethread that analyzes each of the following characters:
Abigail,
John Proctor,
Elizabeth Proctor,
Samuel Parris,
the Putnams,
Reverend Hale,
Tituba.
A Wordle Voicethread takes two mediums, Wordle and Voicethread, and combines them. Follow the directions below to compose them.
Wordle: (wordle.net) 1. Wordle is a site that allows you to create word clouds in a visually colorful and creative way. 2. For each character, you want to list the following: name, 15-20 words to describe the physical and personality of the character, then classify them as static (unchanging) or dynamic (undergoes a major personality change) AND round (well-developed and multi-faceted) or flat (one-dimensional). I recommend doing this in a word document in the event the Internet doesn’t cooperate, as is sometimes the case. 3. Go to the website above, and click on Create. 4. Copy the text from the word document for that individual character and paste into the box. 5. Click Go. 6. This creates a word cloud. You can (and should) play with the fonts, layout, and colors to suit the character. 7. Once you have a wordle you like, take a screen shot of it. (see this site for tips on how to do this on a PC) On a Mac, simply hit command + shift + 4 and highlight the wordle. It saves to your desktop as a jpeg. 8. Do this for each of the characters listed above. You should have 7 wordles total.
Voicethread: (https://voicethread.com) 1. Voicethread is a site that allows you to upload pictures and video and to post comments either in text or orally with those. It also allows others to comment as well. 2. To start this process, you need to create a voicethread account by going to voicethread.com and clicking on sign-in or register and registering. This creates a free account that allows you three voicethreads total. You will be using one for this assignment. 3. Once you’ve created your account, click Create. (see tutorial here) 4. Upload all of the wordles into the same voice thread by clicking Upload, from Computer, and then selecting each wordle one at a time. 5. Once all of your wordles have been uploaded, click on Comment and record a comment for each wordle. The comment should explain the major actions of the character and their motivation for doing them. Comments should be approximately 60 seconds, so do not feel the need to reenact the entire play - focus only on the major actions and motivations. 6. Once you have finished recording, go to Publishing options at the bottom of the page. 6. Select “Allow Anyone to View” and “Allow Anyone to Comment” 8. Then go to Embed at the bottom of the page to copy the url (Click Copy This) 9. Email me the link at bryce@nkasd.com
Newspaper: After reading the play: 1. Research McCarthyism, the Cold War, and the term allegory. 2.
